For almost a decade any fans of these, the movies that began Modernist cinematic revolution, were cursed to either watch bad prints on DVD or wait patiently for a real print to come through town (and there are only a few towns where this applies). Now that Criterion has finally worked their magic on these films, there is no excuse - go out and rent these immediately.
Edit:
This superior work of criticism, which provides great context to the above films, seems to have been reprinted relatively recently. I may pick it up for the revised preface alone - given how cynical the author was in the early 80s about the future of socially-informed filmmaking post-Jaws, I'd like to see what he thinks of the last few decades!!!
